Having demonstrated the new drilling technique, Curiosity returned to the Stoer location in the Pettegrove member to drill a new rock close to where the drill had not been successful. This time both rotation and percussion were successful in drilling a full depth hole and collecting a full sample (Fig. 9.22).

The position of Curiosity relative to the rock and the lighting permit a view of the layer edges below the surface. The top layer, which generated most of the tailings, was more brittle than the deeper layers, an indication of the reason it is hard. A phenomenon called diagenesis was probably involved. After the sediment was deposited from water and dried, a second wetting of water saturated with a cementing mineral may have deposited the mineral in the pores of the sediment, hardening it.
